“Sis, Have You Talked to Her Lately? (You Know—Her Her)”

Whew, y’all. Listen.

I was minding my business (as usual) watching my go-to comfort show, Grey’s Anatomy, because y’all already know, Shonda Rhimes is a genius and Dr. Miranda Bailey is my spirit animal in a lab coat. The sass, the poise, the professionalism… chef’s kiss. But this time, it wasn’t Bailey who grabbed me by the edges of my spirit.

It was Dr. Edwards.

Now, if you don’t know her, let me bring you up to speed quickly: Season 13, Episode 8. They’re in surgery. High stakes. Everybody’s got a scalpel, but nobody’s listening to Dr. Edwards. And in this moment of chaos, she sees herself, her younger self. Not a ghost, not a flashback, but the voice of her inner little girl showing up like: Sis. Speak up. Speak FASTER. Use your voice, or they will not hear you.

And whew. That hit me like a church fan on a hot Sunday.

It made me ask myself, and now I’m asking you: When’s the last time you had a conversation with your younger self?

Not the polished you. Not the LinkedIn bio you. I’m talking about the little girl in cornrows (or press-n-curls) who was curious, bold, unfiltered, and probably a little afraid, but still dreamed BIG. She might not have had degrees or credentials, but baby, she had insight. She had instincts.

She had grit.

So, here's what I’m inviting you to do. Right now. Well... after you finish reading, of course.

3 Conversations You Need to Have with Yourself

1. Talk to your younger self. Ask her:

  • What did you want before the world told you who to be?

  • What made you light up, before survival became the goal?

Then say thank you. She got you here—even with scraped knees and a bruised ego.

2. Talk to your older self. Ask her:

  • What would future-me thank me for doing today?

  • What should I stop doing to protect my peace and purpose?

Imagine her standing tall in healed skin and unshakable peace. She’s whispering: “Keep going. You’re closer than you think.”

3. Talk to your now self.

Sis, you are living in the answered prayers of your younger you. So, are you honoring her effort… or doubting her progress?

Final thought:

Sometimes you need to sit, sip, and write it down. Let the wisdom from your past guide your next step. Let your breath bring you back home.

So, here's your gentle invitation:  Write.  Record. Reflect.

Because every version of you—past, present, and future—is rooting for you to get where you’re supposed to be.

Thank you to my BFF Johnnetta Shaw who always reminds me:

“What if every experience was preparing you for this very moment of opportunity?”

Now that’s a word.

So, go on sis, close your eyes, take a breath, and ask… "What does she want me to know?"

And when you hear her? Don’t silence her. Speak up. Speak faster. Speak from the depth of your story.

Because if you don’t use your voice, then they won’t hear you.
